The Future, The Worker, The Plan

Teleworking, or Telecommunicating is fast becoming an option many corporations are looking to as a viable cost savings alternative. According to a new book of advice and resources for Remote Workers from Kate Lister and Tom Harnish, called “Undress For Success”, US companies could add more than $260 million a year to the bottom line with the inclusion of teleworking principles.

Studies gathered for “Undress for Success” include one interesting but certainly not surprising statistic that more than 33 million non-teleworkers are anxious to acquire positions enabling them to work from home. The benefits of increased telecommuters simply compound, with the first being the average savings for a company of approximately $7900 per year for each new teleworker.

Citrix, a maker of Telework Software and other resources conducted a survey of small business owners and workers and found that one in five workers prefer the option of working from home and would take a pay cut of as much of 5% to do so.

Statistics are not hard and fast in this area, however the estimate is that the number of U.S. telecommuters ranges from between 2.8 million people (consider home their primary place of work, not included the self-employed) and 44.4 million (includes anyone works at home at least once a year). Past projections have suggested that by 2010 the amount of people Teleworking would top 100 million.

Remote Working has given birth to numerous tools that enable people to stay connected, or structure their operations so that no matter where they may be, they are accessible if they choose to be. “In the Cloud” telephone systems are leading the way, providing the mobile warrior a chance to compete with their new  found “fortune 500 image”.

Business large or small focusing on customer service are gaining the edge against their competitors by acquiring innovative methods to stay connected and remain reachable.  No doubt we live in a world of tired people, and there is no doubt that teleworking tools assist companies in structuring their end game; to reduce cost, be environmentally conscious and reduce employee stress providing them with the desired by-product of increased  production.
